McHenry County Alert: Ways to Support Local Equestrian Community
February 28, 2013
Here are some things you can do to help support our local equestrian community. These are the latest updates affecting riders in McHenry County. For more details on any of these items, please go visit their website here.
Open Position on MCCD Board
The McHenry County Conservation District (MCCD) Board of Directors has a current opening for one member who will be appointed to a five-year term. Applications are currently being accepted by the county through the month of March. The application is available on the county website and must be mailed in before April 12. If you’d like to see more public trails in our county and/or the opening of a public county facility for indoor winter riding, please consider volunteering to be a member of this very important board. For more information about the position and the appointment process visit their website here.
Fox Bluff Master Plan
A Fox Bluff Master Plan Open House will be held March 7 from 5 to 8 pm at the McHenry County Conservation District’s Prairieview Education Center (2122 Behan Rd. in Crystal Lake). Representatives from the District will be in attendance to explain the second draft of the plans for recreational development of the 279 acres and take public comments. There are four versions of plans currently under discussion. The preferred plan does not include any access for equestrians but option #3 (currently categorized as not preferred) does include a three-mile equestrian/hiking trail. The versions of the plan are available here. If you can't attend the Open House to let the District know that you would like to have more public equestrian trails in our area, you can still help support the local equestrian community by sending an e-mail to provide your opinion until March 18.
MCCD has also just opened another online survey. This one focuses on what educational programs and events the district should offer. If you would like to see some horse-themed programs, please take the survey before April 20. Survey available here. You can ask for equestrian programs under "other" in the write-in comments section of question #14.
Land Use Public Comment Encouraged
The county is continuing in its quest to produce a single document that covers all of the land use regulations for unincorporated land in the county – the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO). In March, two joint meetings of the P&D Committee and the ZBA are already on the calendar. Public comment is allowed at these meetings, so you do have the opportunity to provide input. The current version of the document is available here.
Finally, please complete the Horse Census here and encourage your friends to take the survey as well.
